Gmail’s viral marketing

Mike Linksvayer was the first I saw to point out the cleverness of Google’s “Invitation Marketing”:

How many otherwise respectable folk have you seen dedicating email broadcasts and blog entries to announcing that they have a few Gmail invites to give away, especially in the last couple weeks? I lost count long ago. Ad avoidance overcome, indeed.

I don’t think I’ve been on a mailing list where Gmail invites weren’t offered. Is this what was meant by sell-side advertising?

  1. Obviously, Google is doing again what worked really well for one of its other products, Orkut, a social-networking website.

  2. Howdy.

I’ve been wondering about this being a type of pseudo-guerilla marketing ploy for a long time now. They have created an exclusive invite-only beta that millions of people are being invited to. It’s very smart.

    Congratulations to Google’s marketing group.

  3. How about a hand here? What in the names of marketing are you talking about when prices are collapsing big name brands. I am looking to lay some fiberoptic in the Amazon Basin along golf courses…Lets make everybody happy.
